Weston A. Price Homemade Baby Formula (Cow Milk)
This recipe has been modified from the Baby Formula Recipe listed in the book "The Nourishing Traditions Book of Baby & Child Care" by Sally Fallon Morel & Thomas S. Cowan. I personally made this recipe for my son from the age of 4 months to 18 months of his life. I found that the way the book described the assembly of the recipe did not produce a homogenous mixture that was pleasing to consume and did not store or reheat well. After trial and error, this is the method I used to make the formula. I want to be clear that all of the ingredients are the same as in the book. It's the method that is different. There are other bases you can use such as raw goat milk, or bone broth/liver base if your baby doesn't tolerate milk. Please reference the book for more information on that. If you are have any questions regarding this recipe, please feel free to reach out to me. 916-318-0299

Ingredients

  • Raw Cow Milk
  • Filtered Water
  • Lactose Powder
  • Beef Gelatin (Grass Fed)
  • Nutritional Yeast
  • Bifidobacterium infantis
  • Acerola Powder
  • Olive Oil (Highest Quality)
  • Sunflower Oil (Highest Quality)
  • Fermented Cod Liver Oil
  • Liquid Whey (Raw)
  • Coconut Oil (Highest Quality)
  • Butter Oil (Ghee)

Directions

Ingredients:

(Single Batch- Small babies 0-3 months)

Base:

2 C Raw Milk in vessel with taller sides (think 1/2 gallon canning jar or similar)

2 C room temp filtered Water. (Set aside 1 C , and add the other C into a small sauce pan on the stove. Place on very low heat)

*Add the following to a small sauce pan with water warming on very low heat on the stove to dissolve completely:

4 TBSP Lactose Powder

2 Tsp Beef Gelatin

*Mix lactose powder and Gelatin together before dissolving into the water on the stove. Whisking while adding these will help with clumping.

2 Tsp Coconut Oil

1/4 Tsp Butter Oil

*Add the other 1 C of room temp water you set aside in order to cool down the mixture on the stove before adding it to the milk.

Add the following to the vessel you put your milk into. Mix all of the dry ingredients together before adding to the milk. You may, however, put the liquid ingredients in separately without combining first.

2 Tsp Nutritional Yeast

1/4 Tsp Probiotic (Bifidobacterium infantis)

1/4 Tsp Acerola Powder

1 Tsp Olive Oil (cold pressed, highest quality you can find)

1 Tsp Sunflower Oil (highest quality you can find)

1/2 Tsp Fermented Cod Liver Oil (Highest Quality you can find)

1/4 Liquid Whey (you'll have to make this with naturally clabbered raw milk)

If you don't dissolve and/or melt the ingredients in water first, your formula will not dissolve well when blended together.

After everything is added to the milk, you can either use a blender, or ideally use an immersion blender (stick blender) to combine the formula together at the end. If you are using a blender, please make sure you're not heating the formula too hot.

Store in refrigerator and use as needed. Make sure you shake it well first before you pour into bottles.

For reheating:

The fastest way I learned to warm the formula is in a small sauce pan on very low heat, using (very clean) fingers to constantly stir and make sure it's not getting too hot.

This formula will last about 2 days in the fridge. I was making this formula every other day. when he was young, then I tripled the batch when he was eating more. (3+ months)

It may seem like a lot of work, but as you continue to make it, you'll get to the point where you could do it with your eyes closed.
